TUNEAGE: ELECTRIK RED

Me and my bews are back at it!

Tuesday night was the album release party for the new girl group Electrik Red. The party was at Cain, which has gone through a DRASTIC transformation since my Wednesday nights there with Lady Fag and the crew during Summer '08.

I have yet to listen to the entire album entitled,"How To Be a Lady", but some of my boys are saying its fye. (that means fire LoL) I don't really dig their latest single, but the vid below gives me my life every time I hear it. It started blasting through the speakers and it was a WRAP!

Go AWWF!

*I can't find my camera cord right now, but I will post pics when I do.

TUNEAGE: KANYE WEST

Word Yeezy?

Love the song. Heart 'Ye. Adore Rhi Rhi.

What more can I say???? I LOVE this picture of Michelle Obama!

Kathe Sandler from the Heads UP! event asked the question, what are we going to do in the years of Michelle?? This lead to, when is Michelle going to give the CHI a breather and rock a natural? ::Anticipation::

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0008

I WAS ON A BLOG! I WAS ON A BLOG!

One of my fave spots in BK, Habana Outpost opened on April 18th. The opening of Habbie ushers in the summer season and brings out the most gorgeous people in BK. Opening day was IN-SANE! If you have ever doubted the beauty of the Black race...tip over to Habbie on a Saturday and be ready to be awestruck. Please stay home if you have self-esteem issues...LoL

Anywhoos, I was enjoying my day and a curly girl walked up to me and asked if I would pose for her natural hair blog. Being a total ham, I quickly said yes. I tried out a new hairstyle and was anxious to show it off. Here's is the result:

Photobucket
 That's my gorgeous friend Irwin! He's AH-MAY-ZING!

Please check out Jamala's blog. Serious Curly Girl inspiration!  Thanks for digging my hair chica!

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0007: HEADS UP! IV

I had two MAJOR highlights of the night!

First, I met one of my FAVE natural hair bloggers, Wes of Honey Brown Sugar. She was super cool! PLEASE check her out!

Secondly, the main event of the night was an interview with Camille Yarborough, author of the 1979 book, Cornrows. My mom read this book to me constantly when I was a youngster. It truly made me love and appreciate the beauty and strength of my natural hair. I was near tears when I got the opportunity to speak to her. If you've never had the opportunity to read Cornrows, head to your local library or purchase a copy.

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0007: HEADS UP! PART III

Alrighty gang...I'm gonna try to wrap up my series on the Heads UP! event. I took sooo many notes. Edit! Edit! Edit!

Commercial break: Thanks to everyone that responded to the second post!

The panel was awesome, awesome, awesome! To keep from rambling, I am going to list some key points and list the panel members. Click on their names for further info. Make sure to give me your feedback!

Never knew what "bad hair" was until I went natural
-Wow! As someone who never really thought in terms of "good hair" and "bad hair", I noticed that once I started wearing natural styles, people talked about my "good hair". People always compare their hair to mine not knowing that I have a kinkier texture than their own.

There is no lightskin privilege.Lightskin women's hair is used not only as a weapon against browner sistahs, but as a weapon against them.
-I NEVER thought of the plight of lightskin women in this whole ligtskin/darkskin drama. The example used was that a brother prefers lightskin women over brown. He is not dating the lighter woman because of who she is internally, but because of her more European appearance. Eek! There was a woman on the now infamous "Good Hair" Tyra episode that explained that she dates lightskin men exclusively so that she can have light children with "good hair", not because of attraction.

Studies have shown that neurological damage can happen to the unborn children of the cosmetologists, not the women getting the perms.
-Self explanatory. If you are preggo, PLEASE apply perms in well ventilated spaces.

It's not about permed or natural hair, its about health!
-We tend to pit the curlies and permies against each other. But at the end of the day, my 'fro is not a statement of Black pride, but the decision to keep my hair as healthy as possible. A panel member discussed the stages of of a curly girl, the first being a "Nappy Nazi". Let's honor everyone's decisions and not attack each other ladies. ITS JUST HAIR!

TUNEAGE: INDIA ARIE

I. LOVE.THIS.SONG.

"Good Mourning" is prob my favorite from India Arie's Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationships album. Chica was DEF telling my business in this song. The song is so bittersweet, but these lyrics always make me smile. "I know that GOD's will will be done..so its a good mo(u)rning after all." YaY GOD!

The video I posted is by Dewi. She has tons of vids on YouTube singing mostly India Arie. I love her rendition of the song. Very sweet, but haunting at the same time.

ENJOY!

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0007: HEADS UP! PART II

K, so I gave you guys the background on the event, now on to some of the wisdom nuggets handed out that night.

The first interview was with filmmaker, Kathe Sandler. In 1993, Sandler made a film entitled " A Question of Color". A video excerpt preceded the interview. The documentary dealt with hierarchy within the Black community based on skin color and hair texture. Sandler, also explored her upbringing as a biracial child. In the excerpt, two women were profiled holding opposing ideas about natural hair. This is not being biased to the woman with locs, but she said two things that really stuck out for me.

After cutting her hair and starting all over, Robin (the woman with locs) talked about her struggles with self-acceptance with the shroud of permed hair being taken away. Through this journey, she stated that as her locs grew and matured, she simultaneously experienced internal growth. As her locs became stronger, she too found the strength within. WoW! But then she went on to say..."But Black people love long hair" Double WoW!

So people, lets caucus!

Does natural hair truly mean that one has achieved self-acceptance nirvana?

My English Professor Dr. Daniel Black, brought this up in class one day. Are Black people obsessed with long hair? Does natural hair get a pass if its long?

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0007: HEADS UP! PART I

Wednesday May 20th, 2009 was one of the best days of my life! My good friend Mrs. Sims invited me to an event at Long Island University entitled "Heads Up! A Soulful Celebration of Our HAIRitage" Amazing!Amazing!Amazing!

Heads Up! is the baby of former anchorwoman Melba Tolliver, owner of Khamit Kinks, Anu Prestonia, and writer Maitefa Angaza.

In 1971, Melba Tolliver was sent down to Washington D.C. to cover the wedding of President Nixon's daughter, Tricia. After struggling with the curly girl plight, she decided to go natural and began donning an afro. Due to this decision, Tolliver recieved tons of pushback from network execs. She was told that if she wanted to remain on air, she must wear a hat or scarf. (Dumb right?) Tolliver stood her ground and with the support of people across the globe, she was back on air sporting her 'fro. She read an excerpt from her upcoming memoir, "The Accidental Anchorwoman" about the ordeal. Please stop by her website to learn more about her, the memoir, and follow her blog.

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0006

Its been a week since my first Bantu Knot-Out and it was time for a wash and redo!

I washed my hair and the weave since they both had product on them. However, I focused on my own hair for conditioning. I'm currently using the Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion line with avocado and cassia. Check back for a product review on those!

After washing and conditioning, I shook out the excess water, slapped on some Lustrasilk,two-strand twisted my hair, and put it in the bantu knots.

Photobucket
I know I look crazy, but we're all family! LoL

Since I did this last knot-out on washed wet hair, the curls were a bit tighter. I love the "French Wave" hair because it acts like African-American hair. I think next week I will stretch it because I like the gaudiness of the knot-out on dried, stretched hair. Its huge and gets bigger as the days go on. Here's a pic of the back last night.

Being banjee....a car rode by playing "They Know"

CITY BOPPIN': SMALL WORLD

Word to the wise: NEVER talk bad about anybody, cuz you never know who they know.

Got up for dinner with my boys Joey and Nzimiro on Friday. A certain someone stood me up before I left for the A, ::cough cough:: , but he made up for it. I know these dudes through tons of people in Atlanta and here in NYC and didn't even know that they knew each other. So you can imagine my face when Nzimiro walked in and came to the table. LoL

Let's get it together!

Shameless hair plug...Look at the curls! LUVS IT!
We had dinner at Brooklyn Moon in Ft. Greene. My friend Corey and I LOVE this place! They are always bumping some good tuneage and the patrons are some of the most gorgeous people in Brooklyn. To top it off, if you get there before 6pm, they have a $5 Anti-Bush menu. Yes, $5. A FULL meal for $5! It is also Black-owned so I always feel great giving them my coins. Make sure you stop in sometime.

TUNEAGE: SPREE WILSON

Ok, ok...shameless plug for my friend and brother, Spree Wilson.

Since I actually know him, no need for a dry impersonal bio. LoL I always saw him around campus since freshman year and thought he was THEE coolest. I had a house party my sophomore year and thought that that was the perfect opportunity to coerce him into being my homie. Stalkerish, I know...anywhoos. We had tons of friends in common, so I invited them and he came along. We've been brosefs ever since.

Spree is an amazing artist that actually loves music. (Rare right?) He can really dig in those crates and bring out some secret classics spanning genres and decades. I love him as a person and I can't wait until he is fully introduced to the world. Ya'll snap rappers and psuedo guitar players (insert Jay-Z and Weezy here) run for cover, cuz my boy is coming!

Check him out here.

TUNEAGE: GOON TUNES

I'm in the A, so I feel I MUST post one of my fave ATL YouTube videos. This song would GO AWWF in the club circa sophomore year.

One thing that I will always love about Atlanta songs is that they always offer instructions on what you should do once the song comes on..but sometimes they can be a bit demanding.

DO IT!DO IT!DO IT! DO IT!DO IT! DO IT! DO IT! BEND YOUR KNEES, ROCK YOUR HIPS, DO THE POOLE PALACE!

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0005

I gotta confess ya'll...I used a blow dryer! BUT it was necessary...AND it was only on a few strands...SWEAR I promise not to do it again.

...I.WILL.BE.A.GOOD.GIRL.UNTIL.OCTOBER15TH.I.WILL.BE.A.GOOD.GIRL. UNTIL.OCTOBER15TH.I.WILL.BE.A.GOOD.GIRL. UNTIL.OCTOBER15TH.

This 6 Month No Heat Challenge is indeed a challenge. I'm back on the wagon again! ::sigh::

In light of this confession and the last 3 days in Atlanta, this Usher video post was indeed necessary. This album came out my freshman year and it set Bumstead Hall into a tizzy! It played non-stop for a semester and a half.

I'M GOING TO ATLANTA: DAY TWO

Reeeeeee-caaaaaap!!!

Photobucket

Sunday was graduation day for Spelman and Morehouse College. I was awake, but the rain did not agree with my spirit to attend Morehouse's 8 a.m. service. However, I wanna say congrats to all my little brothers that crossed the stage! Spelman's service was later that night at 5. I feel a vent coming on, but I digress.

The SC graduation was DEF giving UNCF Awards T. Tyler Perry, Steve Harvey, and Natalie Cole were all in attendance. Cornel West was the keynote speaker...if you've seen him speak you know it was awesome in an olschoolbutcoolpanafricanacamedmia kinda way.

So many of my little sisters crossed the stage that night. I'm BEYOND proud of them and stand in awe at the women they've become. The world REALLY needs to watch out for these chicas!

Marvel at the Spelman women...

Photobucket
Me and this girl go back decades. Her mom is like another mother to me...they even have the same name.

Photobucket
I swear you guys, THIS is my role model! One of the brightest chicks I know and can still construct a mean fit!

I remember meeting her when she was in 8th grade. She is now a Spelman grad, a mother, and a law student at Penn.

Just an FYI, AUC Council RUNS the AUC. I see you Lil Ghetto!!!!

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0003

MY.HAIR.DEBACLE.

Ok, get to Atlanta, the hair I had in was not the look I was going for a-tall! So after RoxC scooped me from the aypoht (thats Atlanta for airport), we trudged through the city looking for the right weave. After like 5 hair stops, a drop in on my fave agile fat bol, and dinner with two Morehouse brothers, I FOUND THE RIGHT HAIR.

Mad dash to take the other weave out (saved it to use later in the summer)and put the new installation in. My country cousin Leslie was meeting RoxC and I to go out for the night. Luckily I finished it just as she arrived. I wore it just puffy last night, but it is in bantu knots right now for graduation.

Photobucket

This is the absolutely NOT face! Wrong weave + Laguardia spiral.

5.16.2009

LAGUARDIA SPIRAL

At the airport after being trapped in a tsunami waiting for the M60 (Hey Harlem!)

I love having a PDA! Checked in online, PAID FOR MY LUGGAGE...pause: You read right, I had to PAY for one bag to go on the plane. No ladies and gentleman it did not weight more than 50 pounds. AirTran charges for bags....A Fool!

While in line for security, there were two adorable chocolate girls with Clark Atlanta hoodies on. I went into super alumni mode trying to talk to the parents. They didn't see it ::shrug::

On the way to the gate, I stop to take my hair down. Results? Foolicia Rashad! Gotta make the good good stop
to my trusty hair emporium on my way up 85. Hopefully I can replace this weave in time for early dinner with my Morehouse bros. ::crossing fngers::

So Im sitting here at the gate with an hour to waste. I attempted to blog, but that $8.50 charge shut that down real quick. Im attempting to post via my phone so don't judge if it looks crazy.

Wish me safe travels!Besos!

--Oh $hit! NYC is a crazy place! Im on the flight with the fashion editor of Giant Magazine. I wanna talk to her, butmy heels make me feel like I look uber skyyed. I usually keeps it cas at the airport, but I wll be running around Atlanta all day and didnt know if I had time to change. Just as I'm kicking myself for doing the most with my fit, one of my Morehouse bros walks up. We have been bumping into each other nonstop the past few weeks. Its always so good to see him. He was oneof the first people I met on campus freshman year and him and the crew have always shown love. mmk...time for my nap. When I wake up, I will be in my other home....ATLANTA,GA--

GETTING READY FOR THE A

DRAMZ...DRAMZ...AND MORE DRAMZ...

LAST MINUTE PACKING..LAST MINUTE HAIR...EEK! I hope I have everything and I'm praying to Jesus, Buddha, and the Orishas that my hair comes out okay. In case it acts shady, I can always skip on over to my trusty weave spot by my old apartment in the West End.

Atlanta...I'm anticipating having buckets of fun. In those four years, Atlanta became home so I anticipate roaming the city and dipping into some of my fave spots. These four days are jam packed with lunches, brunches, dinners, drive by-hi's, and of course graduations. I won't be at the CAU graduation, but I will for shizz be rocking the alum pin at the Spelhouse festivities.

In preparation for this weekend's trip, I've been in a super banjee A-Town music mood. "Juke Your Boy" is prob one of my FAVE Atlanta jammies while I was in school...Ghetto and raunchy but it gave me EVERYTHING! I will be posting some other faves during my trip. Catch ya lata!

Please excuse the cheesy screen...but you betta be tootin' to dis song raht huh shawty!

NEW NEW NEGROES

Watch this vid..look out for the blog post lataz.

My friend Corey and I went to the Black List exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum in March. They had a station to tape your reflections on the exhibit and what it means to be Black in America.

The exhibit was just profile pictures of Black celebrities representing music, literature, etc., but it was so powerful! There was also a corresponding documentary that aired on HBO. For more info,
ch-check this out!

I promise a written explanation of the Stephanye W. NEW new negro theory is coming VEWY VEWY soon!

I'M GOING TO ATLANTA! I'M GOING TO ATLANTA!

In approximately 30 something hours, I will be heading to Atlanta. Its graduation weekend and my babies are crossing the stage!

I haven't been to Atlanta since Feb. 08 for my Bday. After graduating from CAU in 2007, my 2 trips down after were weird. Friends become different once you move away and plant your roots in a new city/town/state/country. I haven't really kept in contact with too many people I spent TONS of time with while I was in school. I'm DEF different than the girl that was strolling the promenade o3-o7... but does that mean the end to friendships??

I mean some friendships were honestly based off partying and having fun, but some were organic and really genuine. ::shrug:: I guess its a part of growing up, but it sucks. We shall see what the vibe is like while I'm there. Four days can go REALLY fast or REALLY slow...

CITY BOPPIN: C'EST NOIR

It's Wednesday and that means one thing...C'est Noir at Happy Ending.

Photobucket

Besides the fact that I LOVE HE, the C'est Noir crew is super cool. I love when people aren't too cool to dance and trust, you will break a sweat here. Tonight is DJ/rapper/Ireallydunnowhatelsehedoes Melo X's bday party as well as Alien's anniversary. My knee is still on the fritz (got struck with Runner's knee last week), but I REALLY wanna go...what to do? what to do?

Yesterday was hair day! Since I'm on my 6 month no heat challenge, I have to get creative with my style because wash-n-gos and ponys won't do! I don't remember where I saw this style originally, but it is DEF my fave. It will be a staple going forward. Its a super easy style to achieve. All you need is bobby pins, your gel of choice, and a conditioning product.

Enjoyz!
