CITY BOPPIN: Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

Today I'm finally going back to one of my fave places in BK....the Botanical Gardens. I went two years ago with my mini me and we had a blast! Granted it was 2million degrees and all of the flowers were brown, but we had a great time. Check out some pics with Abeni and I:

As an interior design geek, I find nothing more beautiful than that of Moroccan architecture and style. I have literally obsessed over turning my humble abode into Marrakech, Brooklyn. The more I read about Morocco, the more obsessed I become. This has led to planning a trip to this awesome country. Nichelle is on board and planning is under way!

Make sure to check for updates on my progress. ::squeals::

I Just Really Hope That...

This was the first thing I listened to yesterday and it was perfect as the sun rose over BK...

and when you get the talkin' 'bout the greatest/ I just really hope that/ you remember me/ I'm tryna be unforgettable

CITY BOPPIN: AFRO-PUNK FESTIVAL

Photobucket

Afro-Punk is the one of summer's highlights for me. Its the call to prayer for the "alternative" Black residents of Brooklyn. Dope movie screenings, BMX exhibitions, and concerts make up this 3-day extravaganza. This year it will be held at Commodore Barry Park with Bad Brains, J*Davey, and Mos Def headlining. Click here full a full event list and to purchase tix. (Yeah...its been free the last few years, but whatever,I MUST see Mos!)

Brooklyn is on fire this weekend!!

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0032

Who woulda thunk it??

I rocked a wash'n'go ponytail for the last two days. I haven't done a wash'n'go since like 2004! Life took a serious detour and I didn't have the patience to completely re-do my hair. I co-washed with Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Moisture Balance. After rinsing in cold water, I doused my hair in Eco-Styler w/ olive oil and put a scarf on to slick my sides up. I should have left a bit of conditioner in, because my curls were all gorgeous and defined, but they were a bit hard.

As we speak, I'm prepping to wash my hair, DC, blowdry, and do a braid set. Tomorrow is a busy day in Brooklyn and mama has to look GOOD!

Ciao!

TUNEAGE: CHAKA KHAN

Am I crazy??????????

Why is there no documentation of a Tuneage post about Chaka Khan???? Chaka is my all time favorite singer. I believe that Erykah Badu is Chaka Khan: The Sequel and thats another reason why I love her so. I could babble on for DAYS about Chaka, but it would be better if I just posted some of my faves from her. I swear I was supposed to be a disco-dancing cokewhore in the 70s...

I want this performed at my wedding reception, with a bunch of gay men in biker shorts and I want glitter to explode everywhere at the climax of the bridge. I'm DEAD serious.

Whatcha gonna do for me???

I wake up to the feeling each morning/go to bed/ do it at night

TUNEAGE: Screamfest

I love Fantasia Barrino. She is everything to me. ::cue Monica::

So today I was just scrolling YouTube for some live videos of her. I'm 3 seconds from speaking in tongues off of a run from "Free Yourself" and a little picture shows up on related videos. It was "Endow Me" from BET's Celebration of Gospel featuring Fantasia,Lil Mo, KiKi Shierd, and Coko.

You guys, no matter how much of a hippie I am, I grew up a total church mouse and LOVE gospel! This is one of my fave performances of all times! I may have posted this before, but I don't care, this is my jam! Sing ladies!!!!

Watch an extended version here

This turned into a churchfest and I stumbled onto this gem! If you wanna hear some sangin'....whooo Laaaawwwd...watch this! I was about to cut a step myself...yaasssss!!!!!! GO AWWF!

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0031

My hair really took a turn for the worst on Saturday night, only to have a cat sleep on it UNWRAPPED on a cotton pillow. I kept it in my Harriet's all day and slapped a hat on. I wound up at some disco party behind this pizza shop in Billyburg/Bushwick doing beer bongs, so the hat was a good idea!

That night, I came home and prepped my hair for a braidout. It didn't come out the way I wanted it to, so I pulled it up. I love my curly pony. Coppertop is due for a dye touchup while I'm thinking about it...and a MEAN trim!

Photobucket

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0030 : All Draw'd Up

My day started off some kinda wonderful ya'll....then that devil named Humidity came out to play and ruin lives.

Like a good girl, I came home the night before and separated my hair into about 10 sections. Before plaiting ( yes, plaiting! I'm loving braidouts now) , I spritzed each section with a little water (no too much, I'm loving my hang time), slapped on a quarter size of my olive oil/eco-styler gel mix, and sealed with raw shea butter. I also twirled my ends around my fingers a couple of times so I can have purrty curly-qs.

Sneaking depressed pics at work

I had a rubberband, so I pulled it up into a cute ponytail w/a bang. I headed to my girl Jessica's graduation dinner and off course the rubberband pops. I had a date with this dude from OkCupid that night, so I wanted to look hot. I tried to re-do a braidout, but it wouldn't dry. Went out with a humidity raped afro. I had a great time though. :: le sigh::

Brain Food: Soccer's Lost Boys

I'm a documentary/ investigative reporting addict! Hulu.com feeds my addiction like a good pusher would. One of my fave shows now is Vanguard. They criss-cross the globe and find some truly awesome stories.

America is catching up to the rest of the world and engrossing itself in the awesomeness that is soccer, thanks to the 2010 World Cup. I'm super stoked that this year's games are being hosted in South Africa, but there is something looming over. This episode blew me away. Check it out!

The Conundrum

Its summer. I'm a staunch supporter of nudity. I live in an "urban" neighbs.

Add these things together and you get me crying on Fulton Street walking to Jackie's house.

As a woman, I've been getting cat-called at my entire life. Every time probably hurts a little more and last night was the worst yet. I had on my fave cut offs and a tank top, nothing major. Yet, every step I took on that four avenue and seven block walk, I'm getting yelled at...

"Damn shawty, can I talk to you for a minute?"
"Ayo, yah ass lookin' right in 'dem shorts ma"
"Yo, I just wanna lick up dem thick ass thighs"
"Ma, you too pretty to be actin' like dat!"

One dude drove his truck up on the curb on Fulton ( the main street in Brooklyn) and was yelling out of his truck for my number. At this point, my eyes are burning and I'm at a breaking point. I turn around and yell, "NO, SHUT UP!" Of course, I am now an ugly bitch. Dude, if you would've seen my face before yelling at my butt, maaaaaaybe, you would have known that already. UGH!

Seriously, as a chick who only knows the howls of a cat-call, its really getting ridiculous. Unless you are a close friend you wouldn't know, but I've only had one boyfriend ( at 20) and prob only "talked" to 2 other dudes...and I'm reaching when I say "talk". So, when the only male attention is the quotes above, even the baddest b*tch ::cue Trina:: can get a bit down. When I was younger, I would acknowledge and respond to these things because that was the only way I could get males to speak to me outside of my humor. Its still the lone mode of convo between men I don't know and myself, but I'm not stooping to this silliness anymore. If that means that I will be a lonely cat lady for the rest of my life...I'm cool with that.

Think I could put some sequins on this to jazz it up???

CURLY GIRL DIARIES- 0029

Ya'll should know me well enough by now to know that I fell asleep w/ the DC in my hair and never woke back up!

In the morning, I rinsed the DC out with cool water, separated my hair in four sections and blew it dry on a medium setting. I oiled my scalp with tea tree oil, slapped it into my Harriet Tubman braids and skipped off to work.

Photobucket

I was going to the Soul of Brooklyn launch party that night, so I took the braids out, fluffed, and went on my way. Here's the end result.

Some more of heartbreak drake..

This is a serious contender for my fave song on the album. The first line instantly hit me and I knew this would be a jam. Kanye did his thing on the track too. What say you?

curly girls diary: Give us us free!!!

Ten hours later aaaaaaaaaand the braids are gone! I'm really sad looking at them in a bag on the floor, but look how dope my 'fro looks fresh out of the braids.

Photobucket

I actually washed one go round with actual shampoo because my hair was oily and I had that weird dust you get from braids. I then co-washed with Suave Coconut conditioner. After rinsing, I applied my beloved Pantene Nature Fusion Moisture Balance to 4 sections and detangled. As I type, Im fighting sleep while sitting w/ my deep conditioner in. I wanted to amla today, but didnt have time to go buy some today.

I'm doing a braid out today. I don't think I've ever done one before, but my fro looked dope in the pic above. Check for pics tomorrow.

Its so hard to say goodbye

For the last two months and one week, Ive had my braids. As a true Philly jawn, Ive had these waist-length braids zillions of times, but I was soooo attatched to these this go round. They will be sorely missed...

All I See is Fireworks...

I haven't shared this with you guys, but I have an unhealthy love for Aubrey Graham. Like, to the point of having recurring nightly dreams about meeting him and going on dates to Dallas BBQ. I've got it baaaaad. I've literally been obsessed with him since around 2005,2006 when I got hooked on Degrassi.

Photobucket

His first official album dropped yesterday. ::squeals:: I will do a song by song review later, but there is one song on the album that shows exactly what I love Drake, the rapper, for....transparency. He has an honesty to his music that can leave you emotionally spent by the song's ending. That is exactly what this song does for me...FIREWORKS

Moment of Clarity

No guys, I promise this isn't turning into a music blog. I'm just swimming in great music right now and pressed to share. I've also been all over the place and haven't had much time to take hair pics, load them, write posts, etc. Wait....let me stop embellishing.

I am a busybody and hate being home. Granted, often times, I'm heading to a dinner after work or an event, but often I'm just roaming the streets of NYC til the wee hours. Of course, this leaves me extra tired and woh ahht. Today I promised myself that I will come straight home after work, do a load of clothes, and do some hair posts.

I also have a series of relationship posts for you guys. Its super personal and slightly emo, so indulge me.

TUNEAGE: SWV

How was you weekend guys?????

I had a BLASTO!! Shook my booty at my homie Helen's party BADUSSY and got the chance to see SWV perform live!!!!! These girls saaaaaaaaaaaang!!!!! I am prob one of their biggest fans and can go through their entire discography. They looked good! They sang good! (LeeLee can blow!) I was near tears the entire time. Enough talking....get your life children.

It was Coko's 40th BDay, so Claudette from City High and Kameelah from 702 serenaded the ladies. Then Lil Mo and her husband had the nerve to come out and SLAY on of my fave SWV joints!

This Morning's Jam Session

I'm in a Badu mood this Friday morning...

Speaking of Brooklyn....

My borough got even DOPER!

Photobucket

One word....YUM! Yet another reason to love Spike Lee...

I-Digs: Tim Okamura

Have I mentioned how much I love Brooklyn????

Spelmanite-run (yay AUC!) art gallery MoCADA did a show entitled, "The Gentrification of Brooklyn: The Pink Elephant Speaks" (click link for a dope article aaaand Tim's work is in the background) exploring issues around the ever gentrifying BK. Afeisha and I went and even attended outside events MoCADA hosted to support the exhibition. It was at a movie screening that I met Tim Okamura. The Canadian native had a piece featured, but little did I know the awesomry I was about to see! We've gotten cool since then and today I will be sitting for a portrait with some other Brooklyn beauties, including Afeisha and Jackie. Since my last post was about Badu, take a look at this baby...

Photobucket

Unreal right????? To check out some more of Tim's work, skidaddle over here.

I will be sure to let you guys know when the pieces are done...

TUNEAGE: Erykah Badu

Hands down, my fave singer/performer is Erykah Badu. We share the same BDay so Im sure part of the obsession is cosmic. I have never missed a Badu concert since 2001.....YES 2001! She had a show on Monday, so you know Corey and I were there, acting a fool, may I add.

Erica Wright had me COMPLETELY slain!!!! She performed my two faves from the new album, New Amerykah II: Return of the Ankh. Not to mention, she sang my fave Outkast joint "Liberation" top to bottom aaaaand reduxed her verse on new Outkast "Humble Mumble". Mind you guys, she did it all in a blonde sew-in weave and a nasty shoe!

Here's a clip of her doing Green Eyes 2010, "Out My Mind, Just in Time"
(visual quality sucks, but audio is good)

"Fall in Love (Your Funeral)"

Rain Tuneage

It's raining here in this beautiful borough of mine and I'm off of work. Think this is perfect...

Maybe Miss Cleo Was Real

I'm on my lunch break trying to find a Chipotle and I'm bumrushed by a psychic. Like, homegirl yokes me up and looks at me with pleading eyes, "Mami, there are two men in your life. One that you love and one you don't love! Talk to me about it!" Of course, I pull myself away and scurry down the block, but then I realize.....

SHE'S RIGHT!
:: deep sigh::

Needless to say, for the next 50 minutes, lunch was a total emo eat. I instantly knew who both of those men were.

The one I love...

He's one of my closest friends, but its obvious we like each other...and liked
each other for years. Told me I was the "prototype", but oddly, none of his gfs reflect that. It's like he's hot/cold all of the time. ::cue Katy Perry:: When we're together, its super intense. When we aren't, he totally plays down the rela. We've discussed spending a weekend together and just getting out everything between us,
but I know he would never really do it. I shouldn't care
...but I do.

The one I don't love...

Another one of my homeboys ::smh:: I get the feeling that he likes me,
but we are in completely different social circles and I feel like he
is, for lack of a better word, embarrassed to hang in public around them.
However, his social circle is warming to me now and I'm getting more
face time. Should I feel disrespected? Should I still be his friend?

UGH! Fortune telling gypsy in Midtown, if I gain any weight from emo eating, that's your a$$!

Cuz See on Ultimate Rihannaaaa......

Yes ma'am!

Get up under these candelEbras ladies!
